Hamster Health

Watch your hamster and understand its character. If it appears to be acting out of character in any way, then it may be feeling unwell.  Here are some ailments that your hamster may suffer from:

Bite Wounds: Symptoms include, open sores/wounds which may be infected with puss. Probable cause is having more than one hamster in the same cage, which have been fighting. You should separate the hamsters into separate cages.  The wound should be cleaned with a solution of sterile water and salt.  If you are unsure, then speak to a vet before trying anything. However, all wounds should be checked by your vet and any infected wounds may require medication in the form of antibiotics.

Dehydration: Symptoms include being very lethargic. You can test for dehydration by pulling the skin on the back of their neck.  If it is slow in returning to position then your hamster may be dehydrated. Possible causes include, stress, heat or a faulty water bottle. Administer water to your hamster in small regular doses and if your hamsters location is too warm, remove to a cooler area, then consult with your vet.

Ear & Eye Problems: Symptoms of ear problems include a loss of balance, scratching the ears and head shakings. Possible causes include parasites, infection or from an injury.  You should consult with your vet.

Symptoms of eye problems include, having them closed a lot, runny eyes, or matted eyes and they may appear dull and/or cloudy. Possible causes include an infection or injury to the eye. Keep your hamster away from bright lights, preferably in a darkened room and consult with your vet.

Impacted Cheek Pouches: Symptoms are a swollen cheek pouch (es). Possible cause includes, fluffy bedding (Not recommended) getting caught in the pouch (es).  Check your hamsters mouth and pull out anything that looks like it is caught in there, then consult your veterinary surgeon.

Lung Infections: Symptoms include, shivering, wheezing, loss of weight and lethargic. Keep your hamster warm and consult with your vet who will prescribe antibiotics.

Skin Infection: Symptoms can include, dry flaky skin patches, redness and fur loss. Possible causes include, parasites such as mites, allergies or an imbalanced diet. Consult your veterinary surgeon for medication. However, if your hamster has no other symptoms apart from the fur loss, then this may be due to the age of your hamster which can loose fur as they become elderly.

Wet Tail: Symptoms are wetness around the tail end of your hamster and any faeces will be soft/wet.  Being lethargic is also a symptom. This condition can be fatal, so immediate veterinary attention is required.  Please do not rely on treatments for wet tail from pet shops. Possible cause can be anxiety/stress, especially when young.
